Four Things That Make Up A Skateboard
When you think about a skateboard, usually it's a just a board on wheels that you stand on while riding down a slightly sloped pavement. Of course, there is more to a skateboard than you may think.
If you are thinking of getting into the hobby or just want to brush up your knowledge about skateboards, the first thing to do is get to know about all the parts that make one. Here is a list of the important parts of a skateboard that are placed on the equipment to help boost its performance while doing all the cool tricks.
• The deck – We all know this part as the board. The deck is actually the main piece of the skateboard and this is what you see with the designs painted on its belly. It is a plywood item that is usually made of tough maple and other types of wood. There are different layers of wood that make it solid. This is the part of the board that you stand on and it can measure up to 32 inches in length on average.
• The trucks – You know the metal like parts that hold the wheels to the board? These are known as trucks and these are attached to the bottom of the deck directly. These trucks are also made up of smaller parts. These include the axles, the bushings and the kingpins. You can find trucks made of titanium or aluminum and these can also be purchased in different colors. Nuts and bolts are used to keep the trucks attached to the deck.
• The wheels – There are two types of wheels that you can have attached to the trucks of the skateboard. You can have soft wheels if you are thinking of doing a little smooth skating like indoors or on surfaces that are not so rough. Then there are the hard wheels that are mainly used for skating on the street. The wheels can also come in different colors and different sizes. It depends on the skater and his or her skill when it comes to the preference of wheels. The wheels also have bearings like any other wheel to keep the ride smooth.
• The grip – You might notice a sand-paper like substance that is layered on the top of the deck, the part where a skater stands. This is known as grip tape. It's a rough and large piece of tape that is used to cover the top of the deck. This tape provides traction when a skater is riding. There are some that come in plain black but you can get them in any color and with graphic designs as well.
So you see, there is more to a skateboard than just the things you normally look at. Knowing these parts is essential if you want to attach better parts to your skateboard. The knowledge of these parts and what these are made of can help make your professional skate life a whole lot better. And the best thing about the parts? These all come in really cool designs.
