Three Injuries Or Conditions That You Could Get If You Don't Wear Protective Gear When Skateboarding
Skateboarding, in all its popularity and awesomeness, is considered as an extreme sport. This is so because the chance of getting injured is statistically and significantly higher as compared to other sports. This means that you put yourself at risk a whole lot more by engaging in these sports.
But in spite of these risks, it appears that skateboarding is an ever growing and popular sport that just seems to catch more and more crowds year after year. To protect its athletes, several measures and devices have been created and applied to provide safety and the prevention of possible injuries that one can incur from this sport.
Injuries, no matter how big or small they are, are quite serious. Imagine this; athletes in the National Basketball Association are even sidelined when specific parts of their bodies are bruised. That is not even a full-contact sport! So you should always wear your protective gear. If you don't, some of these injuries might just find their way to you and to specific parts of your body.
1. A torn ACL, ouch. Seriously, super ouch.
ACL stands for your anterior cruciate ligament that is located on your knee. The Oxford dictionary defines ligaments as short bands of tough, flexible, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilage or holds together a joint. Your ACL holds together your knee, which is the joint that connects your thigh bone from your tibia and fibula which are the two bones that make up your lower leg.
If that short band of tissue gets torn, you may be looking at several months of inability to use your affected knee. This means you being possibly sidelined for a whole season in favor of your recovery. If you had protective gear for your knee on, you might just actually avoid this type of career ending injury. So always remember how important your knees are. It is just like a keystone in an arch. It locks and gives strength to your whole leg.
2. A concussion
Concussions are violent shocks suffered from a heavy blow to the head. If not treated immediately, it might lead to some swelling in the brain and even comatose. Hard and ugly falls due to skateboarding accidents are no stranger to concussions. This is not one fall that you want to experience, for it will definitely be a very dangerous and life threatening one if the blow to your head is quite severe.
One way to protect yourself from these kinds of falls is by avoiding doing tricks and stunts that are too complicated for you to complete successfully. As a precaution, always wear your helmet whenever you head on out with your board.
3. Broken or chipped teeth
This is something that you do not want to experience no matter what you do. If you fall right smack on your mouth after failing to complete a trick from your board, this might just actually happen to you if you are not going to wear a mouthpiece.
