Tips On Skateboarding Safety

Skateboarding may be a sport that both adults and kids can do but it does not mean that it is all that safe. On the contrary, skateboarding is now considered as one of the more extreme sports of this generation.

A good number of young children and teenagers have been reported to have suffered broken bones and limbs due to the dangers of skateboarding. And this is the reason why parents should be able to exercise good parental guidance and advise their children should they have skateboards and are quite fond of playing with the same. Here are the top three things that parents should be able to make their children understand and follow to ensure that they are at a lesser risk from any skateboarding accident.

* Rule number 1: Never, ever, ride on the street. The street especially for first time and novice skateboarders is a dangerous place to be. Definitely there will be constant traffic of cars going in both directions. A false calculation or a failure of one to place on the brakes at the right time can cause young children to get hit by cars or to hit their heads or their arms on the road pavement. Unlike a bike where you can easily pull on the brakes to stop it from moving forward, there is more training and experience required to be able to control a skateboard with more efficiency. Better let your kid stick to the backyard or have him ride his skateboard when in a vast and fenced space to be sure that he may not go off and get into a collision with a speeding car.

* Rule number 2: Never, ever take chances. Unless you are sure that you are absolutely capable, do not even attempt to do it. A lot of kids get too excited after watching the extreme skateboard challenges that the next thing you know they will be attempting to do the same stunts right after the show. Make sure to stop them in their tracks and make them understand that these stunts take a lot of time and careful, meticulous practice before these are achieved. If they should want to do a few tricks on their skateboards, advise that they do it in a designated skateboarding area where there are less risks of broken limbs involved.

* Remember a skateboard is meant to carry one person. You can figure that one out based on its shape and size. So no tagging along or letting a passenger ride on the back; this is quite risky.

One more thing, extreme game competitions are not the only events where kids can see these dangerous skateboard tricks, movies and television shows can make as much contribution. A scene from your favorite film may show one kid hanging or hitching a ride from the back of a truck while on top of a skateboard. While this may seem easy, this is actually a very dangerous stunt. A step on the brakes can cause your child to have massive head injury. Carefully and thoroughly make them realize the consequences of what taking chances with a skateboard means. Good comprehension on this could mean the difference between life and death.
